Due to the current economy and unemployment level, the Trustees of the Joint Apprenticeship Committee have suspended the testing and application process.   Notice will be given here when testing is resumed.

 

Entrance into the Sheet Metal Apprenticeship Program is gained by making application for and then taking the Entrance Exam. Applications are accepted at the Local 80 Training Center, 32700 Dequindre Road, Warren Mi. 48092 on the second Wednesday of each month from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM.

At the time of application you must present proof of High School Graduation or GED, picture I.D. (preferably a valid Drivers License) and $40 cash non-refundable testing fee. At the time of application you will receive a time to report for the Entrance Exam. You will also receive information on how to prepare for the test.

Requirements;

1. 18 years of age

2. Education - high school graduate or shall have passed a "General Education Development Test" (G.E.D.) (Diploma or GED certificate must be presented at the time of application).

3. United States citizen or legally able to work in the U.S..

4. Applicant must be able to perform essential job functions of the trade, with due regard to aptitude, attitude, personal characteristics, and shall be subject to a written substance abuse screening test (SASSI). An applicant that fails the SASSI test will take a urinalysis test, if the applicants fails the urinalysis test he or she will not be admitted.

5. Applicants are brought into the apprenticeship program as the need for apprentices dictates.

All test passers are placed on the applicant list, highest score first. You have the opportunity to retest every time the test is offered. If you chose to retest you must reapply and pay the $40 testing fee. If you chose to retest your placement on the list will change according to your test scores and the scores of the other applicants. If you chose not to retest your placement on the list may change as the new testers are slotted in. In the event you chose not to retest, your name will remain active on the list for two years.

Applicants are tested in the following areas: Mechanical Aptitude, Spatial Relations, Pictorial Aptitude, Basic Math Skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, fractions and decimals, etc.

Study aids you may want to use include: “Mechanical Aptitude & Spatial Relations”, Publisher, Arco, New York, Author Joan U. & Norman Levy,  “Mathematics for Technical Occupations”, Publisher: Little, Brown & Co., Author: Bila, Bottoroff, Merritt, & Ross, or “Basic College Mathematics”, Publisher, Prentiss Hall, Authors: K. Elayan Martin & Gay.  

You can find all study aids at Macomb’s South Campus Library/Learning Center's Reference Desk, "J” Building, South Campus. The aids must be used on location. Call 586.445.7400 for the library/learning center hours. The study aids are also available in public libraries or available for purchased at local bookstores.
